Cayuga Dog Rescue is a 100% volunteer nonprofit organization, that depends on people with big hearts -- like you! -- to open their homes to the dogs we rescue. Foster homes are the backbone of our organization, and we operate out of volunteer homes across the Finger Lakes, including but not limited to Syracuse, Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, and Cortland. We bend over backwards to accommodate the needs of each individual foster home. Whether you prefer terriers or Great Pyrenees, puppies or seniors, we try to find dogs in need that work for you. We work with trainers and shelter workers in high-kill shelters in KY and TN to bring these pups to a new chance at life, and the more homes we have, the more lives we can save. Becoming a foster is easy -- fill out an application, and you will hear from us about a home visit. Then we work with you to figure out what kind of dogs are a good fit for your life situation. However, we caution anyone interested to remember that these dogs are often strays, or come from backgrounds like hoarding situations -- they will not be perfect, and they will need someone with expertise in how to handle a dog. That being said, we try to help you every step of the way. Through the generosity of our donors, we cover vet bills, food, toys, treats, and, when needed, training. We also have a network of fosters who can provide guidance, support, and wisdom in how to handle almost any situation. You provide the love, we help with everything else. One common concern with fostering is that it will be hard to give up the dog when it gets adopted. We would be lying if we said it was easy, but you are rewarded with the knowledge that you helped save a life that would otherwise have been lost.
