Hi! My name is Eve, and I am a very sweet, calm, gentle, and loving, 8-9 year old Great Pyrenees!
I have a wonderful story of thanksgiving to share with you during this holiday season!
I recently arrived to my wonderful foster home in NY after quite a sad, lonely, and dismal life in Louisiana. I was homeless and wandering the backroads all on my own for at least 2 years. It was very hard to find food and shelter, and I was hungry and lonely a lot. There was a nice lady rural mail carrier who would spot me along her route once in a while, and when she did, she would leave me food. I was too scared of people to let her get close, so she wasn?t able to catch me, and when I went missing for a really long stretch of time, she assumed I had died. But?a long while later, I reappeared at the edge of a farm, limping badly, skinnier than ever, with sores (hot spots) on my body and missing part of my tail, and finally?with the help of the farmer whose land I was roaming on--they were able to coax me into her car and she whisked me off to a doggy doctor!
Wow! I stayed at the doctor?s place for a while, got checked out, got all kinds of shots and tests and even a spay surgery! Some dogs might not have liked this, but they were so nice to me, and gave me yummy food twice a day, and it was warm and dry, and I was so happy and I feel soooo much better now! The bad news was they found out that I was heartworm positive, which is a fatal illness if not treated, but they say I must have contracted it just before they caught me, because I wasn?t showing any symptoms yet, which is a good sign and means I?m a great candidate for successful treatment.
They all fell in love with how sweet and gentle I am, and looked all over the south and the northeast for a rescue who had an open spot and could take me. It took quite a while, but finally CDR said they would bring me into their foster care program, and here I am!
I am doing astonishingly well for a girl who has been living on her own for so long. I was shy the first day or two, but am now all waggy-happy now, and am clearly extremely delighted when my foster mom comes home! Not only am I getting all lovey with my foster mom, but I?m even trying to engage the other 2 dogs here in play! I love attention and affection, am totally housebroken, eat my meals nicely with the other dogs, walk well on the leash and ride beautifully in the car. I am great with other dogs, great with cats, great with kids and love everyone I meet. The rescue folks can?t figure out how on earth I have adjusted to indoor life so quickly and easily and just keep telling me I am an unbelievably amazing girl.
I need to start my heartworm treatment soon, and I?m sad that it is quite expensive. The docs will do blood panels and chest x-rays first, and then I will begin the series of 3 heartworm shots. I will get 1, wait a month, and then get the other 2, and though the shots are painful, and I might feel icky for a few days after each one, the treatment will save my life, so I am very grateful. My treatment is rough for the rescue to cover, so any financial help you could give them for my treatment would be super appreciated.
